G’Day and Happy 2018! The cannabis industry is ever changing and expanding. As such, we would like to take some time to share with you some do’s and don’ts of edibles. Today I will be using brownies as an example.

When it comes to edibles, LESS is always more! Have you ever been at a friend’s house where they had “special” brownies? They taste so good you end up eating three or four or even more? Only to realize later that maybe eating that many was a mistake? If you are, like any of us, you probably smoked a bowl with your buddies too. Well never fear, I am here to help!

When smoking marijuana, THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) enters your bloodstream almost immediately. When consuming an edible however, the THC is first processed by your stomach, then metabolized by your liver into another chemical, all before making its way into your bloodstream and finally your brain. Due to this metabolization, the “high” from an edible can last eight or more hours and may take 1-3 hours to peak or “feel high”.

Here are some DO’S and DON’TS of Edibles:

DO- Start small, Less is always more! I cannot state this enough. Start with 1 brownie, then break that browning into 4 pieces (especially if this is your first time, or it has been a while since you’ve tried one). Consume 1 of your 4 pieces! Making sure to either warm the brownie up slightly, or have a hot beverage to consume with your treat. This helps activate the THC in your edible and enter your system at a more desired rate. Just like putting a flame to your flower.

DON’T- Consume the entire brownie (unless your a veteran to edibles).

DO- Wait about an hour, see how the first piece treated you, before consuming another quarter of your brownie.

DON’T- Consume homemade edibles unless you know your tolerance. Dosage for edibles is strictly measured, and the THC content is clearly labeled in milligrams on the package. You’ll always know exactly how much you are consuming. Washington State regulates the serving size of infused edibles to 10mg per serving. Homemade edibles are not as controlled and may be much stronger.

DO- Make sure to eat a proper meal before consuming any edible. Edibles are much more intense when consumed on an empty stomach.

DO- Keep all infused edibles labeled and out of reach of children.

DON’T- Prank family or friends by giving them an edible without their consent.
